Antimicrobial resistance
Antimicrobial resistance, or AMR, is when bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms can no longer be killed by the medicines designed to treat them. This makes infections harder or even impossible to treat, which is a serious threat to global public health. This resistance, which can be natural or caused by genetic mutations, is made worse by using medicines the wrong way or too much.
So, it's really important to keep an eye on how bacteria are spreading, to protect human and animal health. This is part of the "One Health" approach, which is a way of managing public health.
The germs most likely to develop AMR include Escherichia coli and coliform bacteria, Salmonella and Campylobacter spp., which are transmitted to humans primarily through food, as well as Staphylococci, Pseudomonas and Klebsiella, which are generally transmitted through direct contact with animals.
AMR is a big concern for the regional veterinary services, which are working hard to follow the control and monitoring measures set out in national plans like the Pharmacovigilance Plan and the Plan to Combat Antibiotic Resistance (PNCAR), along with the Regional Animal Welfare Plan, to stop antimicrobial-resistant agents from spreading and encourage the right and careful use of antimicrobials.
