Forensic Medicine

Forensic medicine is a branch of medical science applied to solving legal problems. This could be anything from officially assessing a person's health conditions to addressing public health concerns.

This occurs in connection, for example, with making disability benefit claims, applying for medico-legal certificates, renewing special licences, or dealing with the practical and legal aspects of death.

 

In everyday speech, people often use the words disability, invalidity and handicap to mean the same thing. But when it comes to the law and admin matters, they’re actually talking about different things, with different implications in terms of recognising a person’s status, their rights and the legal protection they’re eligible for. 

Disabling conditions
Some conditions can lead to a permanent and significant reduction in a person’s working capacity, resulting in a disabling condition. The forensic medicine department of each ASL sets up a special board to examine, assess and establish disabling conditions, so that they can decide who’s eligible for financial benefits or other forms of health or social care support.

Medico-legal certificates are used to confirm a person's health status, and they’re required to determine eligibility for welfare benefits.
