Maternal and infant health
During the first thousand days of a child’s life, the foundations are laid for their future physical and mental health and well-being, which is primarily down to the parents’ choices and behav-iour. Good habits can be transmitted and have a positive impact on a child's future, protecting them from the risk of developing chronic diseases.
Puglia Region implements prevention measures for both women and men, to support them on their journey towards becoming parents. These measures aim to encourage virtuous behaviour that will produce both short- and long-term benefits for their own and their children’s health.
Nutrition
A key factor is the mother's nutrition before, during and after pregnancy, which can have long-lasting effects on the child's health. The same applies to the decision to breastfeed the new-born. Scientific studies in fact have shown that breastfeeding during the first six months of a person’s life can help reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases as an adult.
