Arboviral disease

In recent years, climate change and globalisation (more people travelling for leisure, business and trade) have led to an increase in imported cases of certain arboviruses throughout the country, including West Nile Virus, Usutu, Dengue and Chikungunya.

Arboviruses are viral infections that spread when people are bitten by infected mosquitoes. These mosquitoes have adapted to human-dominated environments and now act as vectors for the viruses.

Puglia has adopted the National Plan for the Prevention, Surveillance and Response to Arboviruses (PNA) 2020-2025, which is all about risk communication and working together between different levels of government, organisations and entities to achieve better results.

The surveillance part of the plan is to spot mosquitoes and the viruses they transmit, as well as to identify any outbreaks and nip them in the bud, while recording and analysing cases of disease in the population.

Basically, we're trying to get the public to understand how they can protect themselves and the places they live. We're also training healthcare workers and putting plans in place to control pests and stop them reproducing.
