Bird flu

Bird flu is an infectious zoonotic animal disease that mainly affects wild and farmed birds (poultry) and is caused by several strains of influenza virus. 
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strains can lead to high rates of bird death and massive financial loss for poultry farmers.

Regional Plan for the Surveillance

Puglia has launched its 2025 Regional Plan for the Surveillance of Avian Influenza, which includes the guidelines of the National Plan prepared by the Ministry of Health, to meet specific regional objectives. 


The Plan is to keep a constant eye on the region’s poultry population, spot any infections quickly and stop the disease spreading.

Information can be collected from surveillance activities, based on reports of dead or unwell-looking farmed and wild birds (especially migratory waterfowl).
