Network of Health Promoting Schools

Schools are the ideal settings for teaching young people how to take care of themselves. Puglia Region has always believed that a partnership is necessary between the healthcare and education systems, to increase awareness among school goers of the importance of health promotion.

To further enhance this synergy, the Network of Health Promoting Schools was formed by schools across the region, which ensures a common approach to the issue and encourages planning, in accordance with the guidelines of the Regional Prevention Plan (PRP).

The projects promoted by the Network aim to raise awareness among young people about infectious and sexually transmitted diseases, healthy lifestyles and vaccinations. They are cross-cutting and carried out throughout the school year. Consult the project catalogue on the dedicated page for more information.

The Network of Health Promoting Schools is promoted by the Regional Departments of Health and Education and the Regional Education Board.

How to join

All schools in Puglia may join the Network. At the time of registration, or when finalizing it, the school must provide the required information, attach the resolutions of the collegial bodies, commit to meeting the criteria necessary to be part of the Network, and finally sign the agreement.

To join the Network, send to the lead school’s PEC address an extract from the minutes of the Teachers’ Council and the School Board showing that participation is included in the school’s Three-Year Educational Offer Plan (PTOF).
To standardize the procedure, a model text has been prepared for inclusion in the meeting minutes — you can find it among the official Documents.

Once the request is received, the lead school sends the Network Agreement, which must be signed by the school principal.

Membership applications are managed by the regional lead school, which oversees the administrative, financial, and technical coordination of the Network, and reports annually to both the Regional and Provincial Coordination Committees.

The current lead school is the Karol Wojtyla Comprehensive Institute of Uggiano La Chiesa, Otranto, and Giurdignano

The school principal, Professor Pietro Vincenzo Gallo, serves as the Network Coordinator.

In order to achieve its objectives in the best possible way, the Network of Health Promoting Schools has also set up several internal bodies.

The member schools periodically choose a lead school to represent the network as a whole, manage administrative and accounting activities and coordinate technical aspects.

Each province designates a reference school, which acts as an intermediary in collecting proposals and resolving problems and which is a member of the provincial coordination group, together with a representative of the local health authority. Finally, ad hoc groups are set up at the Network member schools for the purpose of promoting health and well-being. Each group is made up of the principal and the entire school staff, the pupils and their parents, as well as health and education experts from outside the school.

The Network is supported by a steering committee, which sets and plans the regional policy, and a regional coordination group, which monitors its implementation.
