Despite advances in prevention and treatment, infectious diseases are still a major public health issue today.
These diseases can be transmitted through interpersonal contact, consumption of contaminated water and food, contact with animals or exposure to mosquito, tick and other insect bites.
Climate change, increasing globalisation and the intensifying trade in goods and people between different regions of the world are contributing to the spread of infectious agents, even in areas previously considered low risk.
A recent example is the emergence in Italy and Europe of previously unknown pathogens, such as West Nile virus, Chikungunya virus and new strains of influenza (avian influenza, influenza A/H1N1).

Effective control of infectious diseases requires constant surveillance and the implementation of a complex system of preventive measures, which may include vaccination campaigns, food safety practices, pest control and, depending on the circumstances, antibiotic prophylaxis for people in close contact with patients.
