Antimicrobial resistance
Taking antibiotics has become commonplace to treat or prevent infections caused by certain types of microbes, bacteria, tiny living organisms that produce or carry diseases. However, the excessive and improper use of these medicines can become a health risk.
Scientific studies, in fact, show that pathogenic microorganisms are capable of adapting to survive drugs to which they are exposed over long periods of time, accumulating mutations that make them resistant to their effect.
In the case of bacteria, we speak of antibiotic resistance, but when we broaden the field to include all microbes, such as fungi and viruses, we talk more generally about antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Puglia Region is the second most affected region in Italy, after Campania, with an average consumption of 17 daily doses of antimicrobials (i.e. substances that kill or inhibit bacteria, fungi or viruses) per thousand inhabitants, compared to 8 in the autonomous province of Bolzano.
Regional Prevention Plan
In order to maintain the effectiveness of antimicrobials, including antibiotics, the Regional Prevention Plan (PRP) provides for actions aimed at training healthcare and social care professionals on the correct use of drugs, the prevention of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and the monitoring of the spread of resistant microorganisms.
Since antimicrobials are also administered to animals, the phenomenon closely affects the veterinary field as well. The Plan has therefore adopted a so-called “OneHealth Approach”, which recognises the link that exists between human, animal and environmental health, promoting collaboration between different disciplines.
The PRP provides for information and education on the subject for farmers and animal owners and the adoption of the guidelines contained in the National Plan to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance (PNCAR), for the appropriate use of drugs in domestic animals and animals for food production.
