Bathing water quality
Puglia has the longest coastline of mainland Italy, and effectively monitoring bathing water quality is an important part of overall public health protection, since poor quality could pose a serious risk.
Bathing waters include both the sea and fresh water bodies, like lakes and rivers. In Puglia, the official bathing season runs from 1 May to 30 September, during which checks are consistently carried out to protect the health of bathers.

Data and maps
The Regional Agency for Environmental Protection (Arpa) constantly monitors bathing water quality, taking samples from 1 April, one month before the start of the bathing season, until 30 September. Based on the results of the tests, bathing waters are classified as excellent, good, sufficient or poor.
Arpa Puglia also measures the amount of toxic algae (Ostreopsis ovata) in our sea, reporting above normal values to the local authorities, which can then introduce bathing bans if there is a risk to health.
If you run a beach establishment or public beach and are searching for information on handling and disposing of beach-cast seaweed biomass, such as Posidonia or macroalgae, you may consult the relevant regional guidelines here.
