Cancer screening

Puglia Region promotes free cancer screening programmes for the early diagnosis of cervical, breast and colorectal cancer. 

 

These are preventive, safe and non-invasive tests that can detect a disease before the symptoms appear. Healthcare professionals check for abnormalities in the cervix, breast and colon-rectum through HPV DNA tests or Pap tests, mammograms and faecal occult blood tests (FOBT). 

Screening programmes are aimed at the population belonging to the following age groups: 

Breast
Women aged 50 to 69
Mammography
Every two years
Cervix
Women aged 25 to 64
Pap test or HPV Dna test
Every three or five years
Colon-rectum
People aged 50 to 69
Fecal occult blood
Every two years
The screening tests, and any follow-up tests, are covered by the Regional Health Service and are therefore free of charge. 

How to join

If you’re eligible to join you will receive a letter from your local health authority, at your home address, inviting you to attend an appointment for early diagnosis and cancer prevention testing. 

 

You will be contacted (by telephone, text message, email or app IO) with the relevant information, to remind you of your appointment and to enable you to either confirm or cancel, in accordance with the privacy policy.

If you belong to one of the age groups and have not received an invitation letter or require further information, you must contact the  screening centre of your local health authority at the regional freephone number 800 957773.
