Physical activity

Staying active at every stage of life is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle and boost your overall wellbeing.

Staying active at every stage of life is one of the best ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle and boost your overall wellbeing.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines physical activity as ‘any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure above resting levels’. This means it’s not just about playing sports; it includes everyday movement like walking, cycling, dancing, or keeping up with active household chores.

Find out how much activity you need to stay well at all ages:

Children and young people
At least 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity every day
Adults
At least 150 to 300 minutes of aerobic activity a week
Seniors
At least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week

The 2021–2025 Regional Prevention Plan sets out a clear framework to help everyone build healthy, active habits into their daily routines, no matter their age or setting.

Local sports medicine services are also available across the region at both public and private facilities, which support community physical activity and protect the health of grassroots and competitive athletes alike, providing comprehensive medical assessments and issuing formal sports fitness certificates.
