Electronic devices
The use of electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets and TVs, is increasingly widespread among children, which is why we should begin asking ourselves how these tools affect their development.
The first thousand days of life are a crucial phase for growth, a period when the child’s brains are particularly sensitive to external stimuli. Which is why it is essential to adopt a conscious approach to the use of technology.
Recommendations
Before the age of two, it is best to avoid screen time altogether. Early and prolonged exposure to electronic devices can have a significant impact on a child's cognitive, emotional, physical and social development. The brain needs real stimuli and human interaction for proper development.
There are some actions and small steps you can take to limit exposure to electronic devices.
Avoid the use of electronic devices before bedtime, as sleep and physical health are also affected. The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with the production of melatonin, the hormone that regulates sleep, making it more difficult to fall asleep and impairing the quality of rest.
It is never a good idea to use devices as a means of “pacification”. Using smartphones or tablets to calm or distract your baby can interfere with the development of emotional self-regulation skills and prevents parents from understanding the real needs of their child at that moment. Keep in mind that even educational multimedia content is not suitable for this age group, as it is still consumed via a screen.
