Dengue
Target:
General population
Dengue is a viral infection that is spread to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. The virus cannot be passed directly from person to person. Instead, it circulates in an infected person's bloodstream for 2 to 7 days, during which time a mosquito can pick up the virus by biting them and subsequently pass it on to others.
You can significantly lower your risk of contracting Dengue by taking a few simple, practical steps to protect yourself and your home:
- Stop mosquitoes from breeding: eliminate any standing water around your home by regularly emptying flowerpots, planters, containers, and gutters. You can also use larvicides and fit fly screens to your windows and doors.
- Cover up and protect: wear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing that covers your arms and legs. Apply a high-quality insect repellent to any exposed skin, and try to avoid heavily scented perfumes, deodorants, creams, or aftershaves.
- Travel safely: if you are travelling abroad, get in touch with the Travel Medicine Department at your local health authority (ASL) to get up-to-date health advice, book a pre-travel consultation, and arrange any mandatory or recommended vaccinations. You can also find travel updates on viaggiaresicuri.it and ecdc.europa.eu.
- Get vaccinated: in February 2023, the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) approved a vaccine to protect against Dengue fever caused by any of the four strains of the virus. For more information please contact the Travel Medicine Department at your local health authority (ASL).
